A Crestview man and a woman was arrested for possession of marijuana more than 20 grams with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana less than 20 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia at the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport and $3,400.00 was seized.
On December 5, 2016 at 9:45 PM an officer with the Okaloosa County Airport Police made contact with an illegally parked blue Infiniti SUV in front of the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport. When the officer approached the vehicle and noticed the driver was not in the vehicle he walked up to the passenger side and motioned for the front seat passenger to roll down her window.
As soon as the front seat passenger, later identified as Stefanie Martin, rolled her window down, the officer detected a very strong odor of marijuana emanating from the passenger compartment of the Infiniti. When the officer asked Martin where the marijuana was, Martin started to roll the window back up. After being instructed to stop, the officer called for back up and had Martin roll down the passenger side rear window.
When the second officer arrived, they had Martin and the rear passenger, later identified as Joel Tatum, exit the vehicle. The officer stated in the arrest report that the entire time he was talking to Martin and Tatum he could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. After checking to see if Martin and Tatum were wanted for outstanding crimes and them not being wanted, the officer informed them that he was going to search their vehicle based on probable cause of the odor of marijuana.
When the officer opened the front passenger door he observed what he described as a large baggy on the floorboard containing a brick of green leafy substance consistent in appearance with being marijuana. The officer further discovered in the front center console a large stack of US currency that had a rubberband around it. Located in the map compartment on the back side of the front passenger seat, adjacent to where Tatum was seated, was a small baggy of similar green leafy substance. A box of clear baggies commonly used to distribute marijuana was also located on the floorboard where Tatum was seated was
Martin was placed under arrest for the charge of Possession of Marijuana more than 20 grams with the intent to distribute. Tatum was also placed under arrest and charged with Possession of Marijuana less than 20 grams and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Both subjects were transported to the booking facility of the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.
The weight of the marijuana discovered in the floorboard where Martin was sitting was 447 grams (.98 pounds). The weight of the marijuana adjacent to Tatum was 3 grams. The sum of the money discovered was $3,400.00 (170 $20.00 bills).
Both Martin and Tatum denied ownership and knowledge of the marijuana and currency.
