May 16, 1925 ~ November 5, 2016 (age 91)
Hewell Mayo, age 92, of Blackman, passed away Saturday afternoon, November 5, 2016, at his home in the presence of his loving family.
He was born May 16, 1925 in Laurel Hill to the late Richard and Mary King Mayo. At the age of 18, he was inducted into the U.S. Army, and was deployed to Europe, where he faced some of the fiercest combat of World War Two. He was seriously injured during the Normandy Invasion and received several combat medals including the Purple Heart. Hewell was a retired Maintenance Director for North Okaloosa Medical Center. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman, a skilled woodworker and master cabinet builder even into the late years of his life when his eyesight had failed. Hewell and his late wife were devoted members of Union Hill Church of Christ in Wing, AL.
Hewell was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 50 years, Lyda Mayo. He is survived by his children, Sharon Mayo, Sheryl Merritt and husband, Ricky and their son, Cameron, and Mary Mayo; his brother, Paul Mayo and wife, Wallis; step children, Gloria Franklin and husband, Johnny, Linda Barrow and husband, Ray, Diane Latham, Jackie Harris, Joy Meyer and husband, Fred, and adopted son by love, Bill McGrady and wife, Debbie. Additionally, he is survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
A time of visitation will be held from 6-8 PM on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, at Whitehurst Powell Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at Union Hill Church of Christ at 10 AM on Wednesday.
Burial with military honors will follow at Liveoak Baptist Church Cemetery in Crestview. Flowers are accepted, or friends who wish can make a donation to Union Hill Church of Christ in Hewell’s memory.
