DeFuniak Springs, Fla— On 8/31/2016 at approximately 0430, the Walton County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding a Domestic Violence situation. Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Chris Strawn arrives on scene making contact with a subject threatening suicide with a knife. The subject was holding a knife to his throat and making statements requesting Sergeant Strawn to shoot him.
As the subject continued to tell Sergeant Strawn to shoot him, Deputy Ellison arrived on scene. Sergeant Strawn entered the room in negotiations to get the subject to drop the knife. The subject started to cover himself with a blanket as a shield and continued to make threats that he would kill himself while requesting Sergeant Strawn to shoot him in the chest.
The subject briefly raised his body and allowed the blanket to fall away from his body giving Sergeant Strawn the opportunity to activate his Taser. The darts from the Taser struck the subject in the desired target area and the subject dropped the knife. The subject was taken into custody with no further incident.
A violent incident that could have ended with serious injury or loss of life was defused with nonlethal force. This is a great example of how the use of the law enforcement tools can defuse a very serious incident if utilized properly and professionally.
