A Pensacola man has been sentenced to life in prison of the 2015 beating death of his roommate.

A Pensacola man has been sentenced to life in prison of the 2015 beating death of his roommate.

State Attorney Bill Eddins announced that on December 13, 2016, Kenneth Salter was sentenced to life in state prison by the Honorable Judge Gary Bergosh for the Second Degree Murder of Winston Duane Smith.

On January 12, 2015, 69 year old Kenneth Salter got into an argument with 73 year old Winston D. Smith of the 900 block of Bayou Boulevard, Pensacola, when Smith told Salter that he needed to move out. During the argument Salter struck Smith several times in the head with an object and then left the residence. Smith was found the next day by his son, Todd Longsworth;

Smith passed away in the hospital on January 22, 2015 as a result of his injuries.

At the sentencing hearing on December 13, 2016, the Defendant told Judge Bergosh that he and the victim had gotten into an argument and that he hit Mr. Smith in the heat of passion.

The autopsy showed Mr. Smith had numerous blunt force injuries to different areas of his head.

The arrest was made by the Pensacola Police Department. Assistant State Attorney Bridgette M. Jensen prosecuted the case.
